backlogged a mile and a half

As I picked up the mail this afternoon, I peeked around the corner to wish our postmaster a Merry Christmas. And asked her if she had to work this weekend (i.e. tomorrow morning).

Well, she wasn't scheduled to. With her seniority, her relief employees usually cover the Saturday hours.

But she'd just checked the Postal Service's internal website. And it had a photo of the mail trucks backed up, waiting to get out of Denver following the big blizzard. A line of mail trucks.

A mile and a half long.

A mile and a half. Of mail.

Jeez.

"I think I'll come in tomorrow to help," she added.

No doubt her employee will appreciate it. And any of us who receive blizzard-delayed mail. (Both sons fall in that category.)

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night..."
