floating down the road For years, nay, for decades, I have tried to explain to the wife that the way to smooth out washboard roads is to drive faster. Not slower. And she never listened or believed. So, I drove my way. She drove hers. Just 12 days ago we were on severe washboards, and several times we felt the back end of the SUV lose traction and start to float. And she slowed down. Bumpety-bumpety. For miles. And I bit my tongue. 'Cause since she had gotten the back end floating, all she had to do was speed up a little, maybe 5 mph, and the bumps would have been gone. We would have been floating over the tops. Yes, there is a reduction of control. Your vehicle handles like a boat then, not a wheeled contraption. But hey, guess what? Boats are navigable devices. You can actually tell them where to go, and they'll go there. You just have to plan your moves farther in advance, and make them slowwwww. So, the wife just informed me.... The Mythbusters proved it. Beyond a shadow of doubt. Washboarded roads are smoother if you drive faster, not slower. Duh. So. How come she believes them, but not me? I mean, I drive hundreds of miles a year on washboard roads. You think I don't know? |
