cartographic planning

Modern technology is wonderful.

Yes, this is old news to so many of you. But for us, much of this has only recently been available.

Soon, we should be near this.

Probably not near enough to actually see it, but in that general part of the North American continent.

So, thanks to Yahoo, we've been perusing the motels available near our destination. And their prices, charges for pets, etc.

Quite remarkable. All the more so when you can get actual images of the facilities. And thanks to Google maps and their wonderful satellite imagery, the wife and I looked at the surrounding neighborhoods.

No, you can't see neighborhood "blight" (a word which means little now, since it is being used to condemn so many residential homes for the purpose of "development"... but that's another entry). But hey, one motel was across the street from an RV dealership. Another by a park. Yet another next door to a marina.

So much you can learn from a satellite image. Which one has the most parking spaces close to the building. If I was a trucker, I know the one I would choose, 'cause you could see the separate big rig parking.

Yeah, they got a pool. And there it is.

It is so fascinating, and comforting, to see where we might be. To visually track over 1,000 miles of interstate, and see what the terrain will probably look like. To see all the countryside I missed in the dark when I went to Boise a few years back.

We have actually seen the garden we will be visiting. And have two separate sets of directions to get there. More importantly, we've spotted ahead of time the main boulevards you don't want to take 'cause, hey, you can't get there from here.

Only two really big questions left.

What do we do with the heeler mom?

And, depending on what the answer is to question #1... am I staying home?
