pronghorn pride I went scrounging around in my archives, trying to find the earlier entry I wrote on this subject, so's I could link to it and give you this update. Couldn't find it. Never got written. Another of those back-logged entries hidden away in outline form with *** in the title... So, let me explain... no, there is no time. Let me sum up: You know the painted bison statues in Central City I mentioned years ago, when eldest son was having his surgery? And the painted boot statues we found in Capitol City? (Yeah, I know, I should link. But they're back in the archives somewhere, if you're really curious.) Well, our community finally got into the act. Naturally, we went with pronghorn. And the bald, white fiberglass pronghorn got sent home with their respective artists back in February. They're back. All 30 of 'em. And they're incredible. We're talking mainly local "artists" here, folks. Some who've never done anything artistic since high school. I expected some crude efforts. I was off. Wayyy off. These things are cool! And professional, Even the one done by a high school art club. Yeah, I've got pictures of all of them. Not the best, though. Should have gone back again. But they're only on display one more time, tomorrow, and then tomorrow evening they're auctioned off. No, we're not gonna buy one. I believe the starting bid is $3,000. But I can think of some great places for one. Yards of game warden houses, for two. Look good in our flower bed, too. The bad news, the really bad news is... Buyers are under no obligation to keep them in our community. Unlike the bison and boots, that were on display for a year or two before wandering off to other places. Nope. Tomorrow, I know of one for sure that will be leaving, and a second, the skeleton up there, is likely. And there's a dozen or so we know are staying (local sponsors, so no auction on those). Like the one decorated by the librarians. Looks like a pronghorn when you step away, but up close... You can see he's covered in print. And he will be staying at the library. But the others, those wonderful creations? We may never see them again. |
