Happy Mother's Day to all the female parents out there!

We slept in this morning. Seemed like the first morning in a looong time, but it really wasn't. Still woke up at 05:23, panicking that I had overslept.

Maskless heeler loved it, even gave me a thank you kiss when we finally did get up. Masked heeler was bored without a trip to the country, spending as much time as possible outside harassing squirrels.

Our celebration was fairly low key. Wife got cards, a half-dozen red roses, and a goblet filled with red M&Ms (is it really a gift if she only gets 1/6th of a bag of candy, and I get the other five colours?).

She also got to select the restaurant for dinner, which turned out to be Chinese. Think younger son had something to do with her choice.

When the fortune cookies came with the ticket, I ended up getting a broken one which had no fortune. Sons interpreted that to mean I had no future, i.e. I will die soon (such loving sons). I instead decided it meant my future has not yet been written.

Rather than sticking around for us to finish eating and sipping our tea, eldest son decided to hike to the coffee shop for a latte. I made the condition that if we got done and drove to him before he got to the shop, the latte was off. We were not going to sit wait for him if he couldn't wait for us.

It's a 11/4 mile hike, and we gave him a 16 minute head start.

He was just catty-corner across the intersection from the shop when we caught up. But, of course, instead of getting in the SUV, he sprinted across the street and into the shop. Got strange looks from the elderly ladies enjoying ice cream out front, but technically he did get there before we did, so we had to wait.

The coffee shop has a wooden bar at the large front picture window, with high stools for the customers. And the floor of the shop is slightly above sidewalk level.

Wife knew the folks that originally built the shoppe, and had pointed out to the owner that such an arrangement might make it awkward for women wearing skirts. He either didn't think it was a problem, or thought it might be good for business.

Either way, she was right. While waiting for eldest son, we had fun watching the young man in a ballcap sitting outside with the elderly ladies and his spouse/GF. He was facing the window and had the perfect view as two young gals in short, black cocktail dresses joined their escorts at the counter.

Ballcap man kept turning his head left and right to avoid looking straight ahead. Spouse/GF knew exactly what was going on, and was stifling her giggles quite well. Elderly ladies, with their backs to the windows, never knew what they would see if they turned around.

At least not while we were there watching.

Small town amusements.

Well, she should be done with X-Files by now.

'Night all.
