flower route No lek surveys this morning. Last night I almost fell asleep while walking across the room to let the heelers out. Right. Asleep. While walking. I thought maybe I should try sleeping in one morning. Forecast gave us a 60 percent chance of rain, anyhow. So I turned the alarm off. Around one o'clock in the morning, my conscience woke me and I turned the alarm back on. Fifteen minutes later, I turned it off again. Oddly, three extra hours of sleep, and I was still dead tired. So, anyway. Yesterday's lek survey was what I call my flowers route. The last lek leaves me on the remote north slopes of the mountains, in an area that is an interesting mixture of sagebrush country and prairie. If I hit it right in early May, I can catch most of the prairie flowers during their brief blooms. And I did. The only reason I found this little guy is because I stopped to snag some shots of several balsamroots. Just beyond I found a patch of dwarf miner's candle. Phlox were blooming everywhere, of course. But those closer to the mountains appeared to be a different species. Still dressed in their morning dew. |
