choice meetings

So, I had my choice today.

A boring day-long meeting here in town, or...

A fun day-long meeting 127 miles away, over highways with blowing snow and patches of ice.

I made the drive, of course.

The meeting started with the annual obligatory viewing of the videos intended to make us all safer drivers. Don't know why I'd never noticed it before, but this time it struck me funny that the winter driving video mentioned that drivers should "turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to turn."

Well, duh.

With some recent retirements, there was the introduction of the new hires and promotions...

"This is Rene, the new Shawnda. Shawnda is the new Florence, and Brian here is the new Bob."

Some folks have apparently already had a long winter. Complaining about paperwork, one fellow made reference to "those dumb ass little letters..."

Noticing that the gal taking minutes was quickly trying to write down his comment, he quickly added..."That's probably not the way to refer to those...".

One warden has been having trouble with his truck radio. Sometimes he can hear other wardens calling for him, sometimes he can't. Trying to narrow the problem down, a warden across the table asked "When is it you can't hear us?"

The response, draaawled across the room, "Well, it's kinda hard to tell when I can't hear you, 'cause, you know, I can't hear you."

In discussing possible artifacts for a possible museum display, one fellow mentioned he'd found a brass plaque purportedly from 1868 that mentioned the Duke of Gumby.

To ascertain it's validity, I suggested googling "Duke of Gumby" (I did. You can, too.)

Surprisingly, the verb "googling" was unknown to at least one warden in the room, who reacted with indignance when someone suggested we google him.

"If anyone's gonna "google" me, it'll be my wife!" was his serious response.

The sun had set well before I headed home, but the morning's 65-80 mph headwind now turned into tailwind.

And I had the moon to light the scenery as I drove.

Tomorrow's choice is a day-long boring meeting here in town, or ...

A day-long meeting in Capitol City.

Guess where I'm going...
