photos and Perseids

A couple photos from last week:

They're not as big or as plentiful as some people's crabapples, but we finally know what a couple of the nebulous "Prunus" trees are we have growing in the backyard.

Chokecherries!

Okay, so that's old news. We actually figured that out when they bloomed. But we have, for the first time, after over two decades of trying, our very own chokecherries.

Although the birds or squirrels have already stripped one tree clean.

And yeah, even though they're not really ripe, I've had some already.

Okay, maybe more than "some". Why should the birds get 'em all?

Second photo:

Third photo:

This one taken today, while returning from the meeting in Regional Town...

The official dedication and opening of our community's new golf course is this weekend. But as you can see, the pronghorn have already discovered the greens. I'm just waiting for the greenskeeper's first complaint of damage (he's already complaining about ground squirrels and badgers).

And for those of you who know what our major workload is in August, yes, that's two does and four fawns. Fawn:doe ratios look to be up this year.

The high point of today's meeting, where we planned where nearly everybody is going to be on what dates for this coming fall?

The gal next to me was looking at her calendar, and remarked more to herself than anyone else that her birthday was on a Saturday this year. Which got my interest, since mine is also.

Yep, you guessed it. We share that special day. And both grew up with birthday themes tied to the adjacent holiday.

Read somewhere, somewhen, a mathematical explanation and proof that if you ever get 20-some people in a room, odds are at least two will share a birthday. Guess it's true.

Now, tonight's schedule calls for our youth group to sell popcorn and pop at our sponsoring organization's Street Dance.

As someone reminded me, I need to be on the lookout for cowboys.

Me, I expect to spend much of my time looking up tonight (and tomorrow, too). It's time for the Perseid meteor shower, if you're interested. Could be a good one.

Don't miss it.
