smoky

You aren't supposed to be able to aim a camera directly at the sun and take a picture. Leastwise, not without filters and such.

And it ain't supposed to be red.

Yup. Fire season is here. Not sure where today's smoke was coming from, but it was thick. Got major forest fires north, northwest, southwest and south of us, so it could be from just about anywhere.

Last week the haze had a definite sweet smell to it. Familiar, but I'm not sure from where. Not pine, sage or juniper.

Wife suggested sweetgrass, as parts of Mantana were burning at the time, and she may be right.

The haze makes antelope classifications a little more difficult. Like classifying on a cloudy day. Total numbers are down, because the white rumps and sides of antelope off in the distance aren't glowing in sunlight. And more groups get left unsampled because it's hard to see cheek patches, or the absence thereof, without good light.

Also dampens the views, when your route happens to take you to high places.

Late in the morning, our route also takes us past an open dune. Heelers were thrilled to have a chance to run and play without having to worry about cactus. Bouncing and dashing on the open sand.

And digging.

And just so you know it isn't all taking breaks and playing, we got some work done, too.

This is a doe antelope we saw this morning.

That's 'One'.

And we managed to document a sage grouse brood, too. A hen and her three surviving chicks, who seemed quite enured to our presence.
