xylophone I can't believe I forgot to mention this about Tuesday's concert. Most folks left right after the concert, but there was the usual mixture of band members hanging around in the front hall afterwards, along with their patient parents. Then one musician rolled the xylophone out into the hallway. The instructor mentioned the student by name, who had won a high award at the state competition, and invited all who wanted to stick around for a personal encore. And then the young man started. And the people in the hall were immediately quiet. Quieter than the audience had been at any time during the concert. There were 50-60 of us there (I counted, of course... nasty habit I have), and we just naturally formed a semi-circle arc around the percussionist. It was perfect. It was flawless. The pure tones resonated off the brick walls better than any concert amphitheater. Each of us bearing witness to a special moment. Music for the sake of music. For the sake of sharing. |
